Do Orthotics Correct Bunions?

Do Orthotics Correct Bunions?
Bunions can worsen over time without proper support. Orthotics can help protect your feet and reduce discomfort.

Bunions are a common foot condition that causes pain and discomfort and a visible bump on the side of the big toe. These bony protrusions occur when the big toe pushes toward the second toe, causing the joint at the base of the toe to jut outward. People with bunions prioritize finding ways to manage or reduce their symptoms.

One popular solution is using custom orthotics. These are specialized shoe inserts designed to provide support and improve foot alignment. But the question remains—do orthotics correct bunions? Dr. Eric Gilbertson, DPM, FACFAS, at Renew Foot & Ankle in Minnesota, can help you understand what treatments work for bunions. Let’s dive in.

What causes bunions?

Bunions, also known as hallux valgus, form when the normal alignment of the bones in the foot changes. Over time, the misalignment of the big toe joint leads to the formation of a bump, which can be painful and make wearing shoes difficult.

Bunions can develop due to a combination of factors, including a family history of the condition, frequent use of tight shoes or high heels, or a natural foot shape that increases susceptibility. Other problems, like arthritis or flat feet, can also make bunions worse.

Although adults most commonly develop bunions, the condition can also affect children and teenagers with a genetic predisposition. The pain and swelling associated with bunions can interfere with daily activities, leading many to seek treatments like orthotics.

How orthotics work

Orthotics are specially designed insoles or shoe inserts that support the foot and distribute pressure to correct or alleviate various foot problems. For example, orthotics treat bunions by adjusting the foot's alignment and improving overall biomechanics.

They aim to reduce pressure on the bunion joint, which can ease pain and prevent further progression of the condition.

Orthotics can be custom-made to fit the unique contours of your foot, or you can buy over-the-counter versions designed to fit a range of foot shapes. Custom orthotics are often more effective because they address your needs, whether you have flat feet, high arches, or a particular gait issue.

They can help improve posture and reduce the stress placed on the bunion, but it’s important to note that they don’t "cure" or completely correct the deformity.

Do orthotics correct bunions?

While orthotics can provide significant relief and improve foot function, they don’t reverse the deformity of a bunion. The bony bump that forms due to the misalignment remains unless surgically corrected. However, orthotics can help slow the progression of the bunion and reduce the severity of the symptoms, such as pain, swelling, and pressure.

Orthotics can reduce discomfort, especially when walking or standing for long periods, by redistributing pressure away from the bunion. Supportive shoes help align your feet better by cushioning your arch and forefoot. While they won't fix your bunion, they can help you move more quickly and feel less pain.

Other benefits of using orthotics for bunions

Orthotics not only ease pain but can also prevent bunions from worsening. Since bunions often develop and progress over time, orthotics can help slow down the changes in foot structure by promoting better alignment. Such support is invaluable for individuals in the early stages of bunion development or those experiencing mild to moderate symptoms.

Another benefit is the reduction in the need for more invasive treatments. When conservative treatments fail, bunion surgery becomes the only option for some people. Orthotics can provide a non-surgical alternative that helps manage symptoms and improve quality of life. While they don’t eliminate the need for surgery in severe cases, they can delay its necessity.

When should you consider surgery for a bunion?

If orthotics aren't helping your pain or stopping your bunion from getting worse, you might need to think about surgery. Even if you wear them regularly, some bunions cause too much pain or make walking difficult. We can look at how severe your bunion is and recommend the correct type of surgery.

We might need to realign your bones or remove the bump. Talk to us about whether surgery makes sense for you.

Orthotics can manage symptoms

Orthotics can be crucial in managing bunion symptoms and improving overall foot function. Orthotics can help reduce your pain and take pressure off your bunion, even though they won't completely fix it. They might also slow down how quickly your bunion gets worse.

Try orthotics as part of your treatment, but if they don't help enough with your pain, contact our office or schedule an appointment online to see if surgery is an option.
